The association ‘windo e.V.’ networks the scientific institutions with each other. The Science Night is embedded in the ‘Digital Week Dortmund #diwodo’, which takes place from 23 - 28 September 2024. Science, business, culture and the city have been working closely together in the Science Masterplan since 2011.Dortmund is home to 7 universities (with over 54,000 students) and 19 research institutes as well as numerous science-based companies, educational and cultural institutions. For its exemplary cooperation under the motto ‘Innovation next door’, the city of Dortmund has been recognised as the European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) in 2021 - the only German city to do so to date.

New format with a traditional basis

The Science Night follows on from the traditional Dortmund Science Day, which has taken place 17 times since 2002, most recently in the ‘Corona Year’ 2021 as a hybrid event with video tours . The new ‘Science Night’ format is intended to appeal to a broad audience and inspire enthusiasm for science, convey scientific topics vividly and arouse curiosity. The Dortmund Foundation is sponsoring the Science Night.
